Tarmac of the Dragon – Full Loop

The ride would begin at the tail end of the final Georgian Bay Run June 2026 on Manitoulin Island.

Day One

From there, the plan is to rip north along the beautiful Superior coastline on Highway 17, riding with a group of brothers who are continuing their trek out west.

A natural first stop would be the scenic lookout at Magpie High Falls near Wawa. From there, with the sunsetting I’d swing into Young’s General Store before settling in for the night at the Lakeview Hotel in Wawa.

Day Two

In the sunrise of the morning, I’d say goodbye to the brothers as they head west, while I turn east and begin making my way toward Chapleau, Ontario.

After a quick fuel stop and a short break in Chapleau, the ride turns south onto Highway 129 — known by riders as the Canadian Tail of the Dragon 🐉.

The majority of the Tail runs just over two hours of winding pavement before reaching the next fuel stop at the Tunnel Lake Trading Post in Wharncliffe. A much-needed break, fuel, a light lunch and a chance to take it all in.

From there, the route continues south to Highway 17, ripping west toward McKerrow. The night would likely end at the Alta Vista Motel, though depending on the time and the miles left in the tank, I might push on and ride back to Manitoulin.

Day Three

The final day begins with coffee and the ride south to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island to catch the Chi-Cheemaun ferry ⛴️.

Once the ferry unloads in Tobermory, the ride continues south toward home. A detour through the backroads around Lion’s Head would help break up the long, straight stretch of Highway 6.

After Owen Sound, it’s likely a straight shot home — with a fuel stop or two and a couple quiet breaks along the way.

If the Dragon is kind, the road will be fast, the kms will be good, and this ride will rip!

This is where the Werewolf Run Moto Run has been held for the past couple of years.
Old Frontier Town is a private property you can rent for just about anything—weddings, car shows, bike shows, parties, you name it. There are plenty of cabins to stay in, and the whole place is set up like a legitimate old frontier town, complete with a saloon, a bank, and rustic-looking cabins.

It’s not too far away, making for an easy ride to get there, with some fun back roads along the way. From camp, it’s easy to set up a day ride looping around Blue Mountain and hitting the local twisty roads.  Lunch at Mamacita Tacorita in Collingwood is always a win

Being at the end of the season, it always feels like one last proper meetup before the white stuff comes.

For a few years in a row, my crew tried to make an annual bike camp happen—just our core group. Anyone who’s ever tried to organize a motorcycle trip knows it can feel like herding cats, but somehow we got it together. I booked the campground, Rob took the lead planning the route, and we decided to head south to Turkey Point Provincial Park. It was a nice change from our usual northern destinations.

The ride itself was a blast. Not having to lead was a treat, so I slid into the tail-gunner position and just soaked in the scenery. We caught some good stretches of road, though a lot of the southern routes are pretty straight, and unfortunately you do have to hit the highway for part of it.

That highway stretch turned out to be a big moment for one of our less experienced riders—it was his first time ever riding on a 400-series highway. I could feel the tension coming off him as he rode just ahead of me in the pack. Still, he did great. We merged as a unit, held our line, and got through it clean.

Then, just as we were getting off the highway, something went sideways. Maybe he relaxed too soon, maybe he lost focus after the stress let go—but on the off-ramp he laid the bike down. I’ve been there; those first few highway rides can be intimidating, and none of us even realized it was his first time on a 400-series.

Thankfully, he was okay. He slid pretty well, ended up with some road rash on his hip, but he was wearing full gear and walked it off. The bike—a beginner Honda Shadow—proved its toughness. A bent handlebar, some scratches, but nothing serious. After a break to let the adrenaline wear off, we made the group call to keep going. He was in good spirits and didn’t seem rattled, so we carried on.

We rolled into Turkey Point and set up camp at the site I’d booked. It was a group site, tucked away enough that it felt like we had the place to ourselves. This was late August—either the last or second-last weekend—and the weather couldn’t have been better.

That night we headed into town for dinner at a local tavern. The patio was perfect: good food, a few drinks, and plenty of laughs. Back at camp, the fire burned late as the stories flowed and the crew slowly peeled off to their tents, one by one, in the early hours of the morning.

The next day we packed up and rode home. Everyone was tired, a little rough around the edges, but feeling closer in that way only a trip like that can do. Almost the full crew made it—just one guy missing.

That’s why I love these trips.

In June 2021, a solid crew of four set out on a counterclockwise loop around Algonquin Park, riding north through the Algonquin Highlands before eventually turning west toward Burk’s Falls, Ontario.

We met up at Mark S. Burnham Provincial Park and headed north toward Barry’s Bay, easing into the ride as the roads began to tighten and twist. Early on, we dealt with the usual Ontario summertime wildcard—a brief stretch of rain. It didn’t last long. Before we knew it, the pavement dried, the grip came back, and the ride settled into a familiar, easy rhythm.

We took a break at a scenic spot called Crooked Slide Park to check out the views. Not long after, an unexpected fuel stop led to a wrong turn. We found ourselves a bit off course—one of those moments that seems to show up on almost every memorable ride. No stress, no rush. We regrouped, found our bearings, and eventually worked our way back onto some fantastic twisty back roads—the kind that remind you why getting lost once in a while isn’t always a bad thing.

With the miles behind us and the flow restored, we grabbed dinner and made our way to the first Airbnb just outside Barry’s Bay. It was a solid end to the day: full bellies, tired bodies, and that quiet satisfaction that comes from good roads and great company.

Day two was when we really started to stretch the ride. We headed east along Highway 60 and stopped at McRae Lookout Park in Eganville—the ruins of an old mill perched above the Bonnechere River. The views were unreal: water, rock, and forest stretching out in every direction. It was one of those stops that forces you to slow down and fully take in where you are.

From there, we continued north until the route bent west and we merged onto the Trans-Canada Highway, Highway 17. The scenery shifted again as the kilometres rolled by, small northern towns appearing along the way—places like Mattawa—each one adding to the feeling that we were properly out there now.

Somewhere along that stretch, everything clicked. The four of us rode as a single, cohesive unit—like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—completely in sync with our bikes, the road, and the rugged Canadian Shield rolling past us. That connection is hard to explain unless you’ve felt it: the machine beneath you, the road ahead, and the people riding beside you all moving with the same purpose. This is why we ride—for moments of pure alignment, for the bond, for the brotherhood.

That night, we reached our second Airbnb just outside Bonfield, Ontario. It was a small, cottage-style cabin tucked away at the back of the owner’s property. The stars were unbelievable. We shared a couple of drinks, swapped road stories, and laughed late into the night—one of those evenings that becomes just as memorable as the riding itself.

The plan for the third night had been to book another Airbnb, but instead we decided to muscle on. We pushed through to Burk’s Falls and stayed at one of the crew’s cabins—a longtime favourite. Just east of town, deep in the forest, with a quiet lake down the hillside, it’s a place of real serenity, far removed from the noise and pressure of everyday life.

One of the crew peeled off early, pulled back by work and responsibility. The rest of us stayed, spending the night talking about this ride and others we’d shared over the years—memories stacking up, one trip at a time.

The next day, the remaining crew headed home, and I was fortunate enough to stay one more night alone at the cabin. It turned into a perfect evening of reflection—journaling, sitting with gratitude, and really feeling how lucky I am to experience rides like this, with solid brothers and a life that allows for moments like these.

The following morning, I closed up the cabin and set out on one of my favourite twisty backroad routes home. About halfway there, my battery died. My wife came to the rescue with a fresh one—a small curveball at the very end of an otherwise unforgettable run.

All told, the Apocalypse Run delivered exactly what it promised: rain and wrong turns, long roads and quiet cabins, laughter, brotherhood, and the kind of shared experience that stays with you long after the engines go quiet…..

Apocalypse Run — June 2021

Part of the group—maybe five or six people—rode up the night before, guided by the light of the full moon. My bro Jim and I chose to join them the following day, taking an epic, twisty back-road route to meet them at Pog Lake Campground in the Whitefish Group section of Algonquin Park.

Being mid October , it was a cold ride. Morning temperatures hovered around 3–4°C, eventually warming to just under 10°C. Still, the back roads never disappoint. Endless twisty fun through small towns like Bala and Dorset made the cold more than worth it.

We spent the night hanging out—cooking over the fire, playing cards, telling stories, and having a few drinks. The ride home, however, was a little dicey. The first half was hammered by heavy rain, and a mudslide slowed the highway to a crawl. Back roads it was, whether we liked it or not.

Once we got closer to Bala, the rain finally let up, and Southwood Road delivered some much-needed fun on mostly dry pavement. But the combination of wind and lingering wet cold chilled us to the core, turning the rest of the ride into a bit of a grind. That hot shower when I got home was absolutely heavenly.
