Love & Ride

No better end to the day than a ride to watch the sun set.

Spent 5 days doing a loop through my home province of British Columbia, riding on some of the most spectacular roads in the west.
Heading west from home we traveled to Whistler, site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, through Pemberton and onto the Duffy Lake Road.  Lunch in Lilloette in a nice air conditioned restaurant gave us a break from the building heat.  After lunch we went north east, following the mighty Fraser River for a time before heading east to Marble Canyon Provincial Park.  After a short break to take some pictures we headed off to Chasm and BC's version of the Grand Canyon.  Although it is substantially smaller, it is still an impressive site and well worth leaving the main road.  From there it is a short ride to 100 Mile House and our first night's stop.

The next day we went east on Highway 24.  Newly paved and quiet, quiet, quiet, we counted less than 10 cars on the road as we pulled into Little Fort.  From there we went north on Highway 5 to Clearwater where we stopped to grab a sandwich to take with us up to Clearwater Lake in Wells Gray Provincial Park where we had lunch overlooking the incredible water fall.  After back tracking to the main highway we were off to Valemount where we stopped for the night.

Temperatures in Valemount over night dipped down to freezing so we needed to bundle up as we headed to Jasper where we had breakfast in the park.  From there we started south to Athabaska Falls and then on to Lake Louise.  After refueling, we started heading west through Golden and on to Revelstoke for the night.  At 540km this was a long day so stop in Golden if you're tired.

Day 4 took us south along Upper Arrow Lake where we had a short ferry ride across to the east side and then on down to New Denver where we dipped our feet in the cool waters of Slocan Lake.  Temperatures into the mid 30's here in central BC.  (Don't forget to keep hydrated.)  Once we got the gear back on we headed down to Castlegar for a late lunch and on to Grand Forks for the night.

Day 5 saw us up early enough to get breakfast in Osoyoos before heading to Princeton.  Here we saw our first drops of rain.  And what big drops.  Had to make a longer than expected stop in Manning Park to dry off before heading off to Hope.  From there we had a short ride home.

All in all, we did 2400 km in 5 days through some of the best country BC has to offer.
